Hello there! Let me introduce myself. I'm
MariusMikelsen
On paper it is Marius Selvfölgelig Mikelsen. Selvfølgelig is Norwegian for "of course". The middle name is real; the ö is Swedish, because Norwegian words were not allowed as names.I'm a nerdy metalhippie catdaddy with a passion for stuff, lots of stuff...
I create systems for a living and take things apart for fun. Moss, Norway, a short train ride from Oslo, in a home with more connected devices than socks.
By day I'm a digital warlock and by night I'm fiddling with my instruments, technical dohickies, getting wrecked by my friends in Warhammer III or something.
The story so far
- 2006CuriosityHellbound Hackers, a security challenge site. I ended up as one of the guys maintaining the site, creating challenges and having at least as much fun solving them. I was also very active on a site called DutchDesignz, weird name I know. Anyways, entered in a lot of design competitions and did actually win one or two of them :D
- 2009StagesSomething drew me to showbusiness for some reason... Started building festival stages, lifting insanely heavy MAC III's (a type of lamp), coiling frozen 63A cables at four in the morning. Taught myself the art of brewing coffee that looked like tar. All while doing an ICT apprenticeship, working with servers, networks, support and such.
- 2015Branching outOne job was too limiting for me. I became a one-man shop doing development, sysadmin and stage tech, but of course did some professional diving and pyrotechnics as well. By the way, it is quite a feeling staring at tiny ocean creatures straight up looking like aliens. Not to be compared with the feeling of shooting the confetti cannons at the wrong time in front of thousands of people, just because you don't listen that much to pop-music and don't know the song by heart (like the audience did...) :-/
- 2017DegreeComputer science at Østfold. Ended up lecturing Programming 1 to three hundred students while still being one of them. Nothing can describe how cool I felt having my own office as a student. Also got to help conduct real science on how to best teach kids in elementary school programming. I even got to help study real life UFO's! It's called the Hessdalen phenomena, look it up!
- 2020Large systemsAfter school I ended up working on E-commerce platforms. In the company Kréatif we worked on a large platform called Frigg, a sort of e-commerce backbone. After that I moved on to consulting through Actors, the sister company of a record label and event organiser.
- 2023Even larger systemsAs a consultant I ended up in Telenor, a giant global telecom corporation.First in the "Min Bedrift" team, then "Mobile Business Security". A colleague and I thought building what was requested sounded too easy and would'nt generate enough worth, so we built the thing that could deliver that product on the fly instead. That became Message Center.
- nowPlatforms and thinking generallyMessage Center outgrew the two of us and became its own platform team. We did it though! We created something that had so much value that a corporation created a team revolved around it. Feeling kinda proud over here! :D
Ever imagine what your life summary would be in a 10 second long reel or something? I feel the above section is kinda like that, kinda gets you there but missing all the details. Maybe that's why I'm not overy fond of short format video, tbh I'd rather watch an hour long technical debate on YT than browsing tiktok...

What makes a project interesting? Difficulty, mostly. One hard thing is a chore. Several hard things at once, now that's the good stuff. Try the knobs.
ChoreOne hard thing on its own is just work. Turn up a few more.
Off duty
What happens when the laptop is closed. Some of it sneaks back into the work anyway.
Hover or tap a bar. These are the things that keep the rest sharp.
- Music: I own several drumkits, guitars, basses and even flutes. Not very good at all of them, but know my way around some of them.
- Diving: Breathe slowly, check the gauge, do not panic. Turns out that applies to incidents too.
- Pyro: Years of rigging and firing shows. Checklists are not optional when it goes bang.
- Stage: Started on stages with moving lights and cables. Still like a good rig. Can't relax at concerts anymore because I'm trying to spot all the cables and lights.
- Gaming: Fast reactions and a healthy relationship with getting wrecked...
- Photo: A camera in the bag more often than not. What is not to enjoy about a crisp photo of whatever cool thing we're doing?
- Design: I tend to really enjoy exploring the design space. Strictly for fun when I get the chance.
- Cats: Catdaddy. I volunteer at the local cat shelter whenever I can. Nothing has more authority than a cat.
- Home: Smart home with 133 devices on the network. Automations run the house; I just live in it.
What I stand by
A few things I try to stand by. Short on purpose.
- There is always room for improvement. Say when something should be better, but try to do it politely.
- Habits follow the environment, not the other way round. Arrange yours so the right move is the easy one, in life and in code.
- Leave things a little better than you found them. Code, rooms, planet.
For the record, the house has 133 devices, 37 lights and 15 automations talking to each other. I trust none of them, which is why they get their own network.
End of transmission
That's all folks.
